WRONG way on Black Friday!!

Ok so I just HAD to post about my personal and eventful black friday experience!! We began our adventure at Walmart at 8:50 pm Thursday night with all the other shopping nuts. Of course, by this time there were no parking spots at all. We finally managed to find a spot that was just far enough away to cause blisters to form just from the hike to the store alone! Luckily, I was well prepared from people watching last year and I knew to wear my best running shoes. One of my friends that came with me …. not so lucky. I am certain that running shoes should be #1 on your list of items to have with you on your Black Friday excursion, not only to avoid blisters but just in case getting the BARGAIN meant racing the girl with high heeled boots next to you. Tennis shoes win out every time unless of course she decides to use the boot as a weapon to take you down. In that case, you may just spend Friday Blacked out!

To make a LONG story short, we were able to make it out of walmart with only a bruised shin (myself), a knot on the head (my mom was just grazed with a toy guitar) and a whelp on the lip (my sister in law still has no clue on how that happened but it happened in walmart) After saving a total of maybe $20.00 we took off toward Gainesville with our three man army: myself, my mom and my sister in-law. (At only one man down, we were doing pretty good – due to her uncomfortable shoes I’m sure, one of my friends only lasted 30 minutes or so before turning in but unfortunately she took my jacket AND all my sale papers with her by accident so there went our game plan!)

Little did we know, we drove all the way to Gainesville and came back with one thing and one thing only …. COFFEE! After finding out the Toys ‘r’ Us checkout line was a four hour line, we decided to abandon our full buggy to go to the mall in search of a Starbucks that was smart enough to open on the busiest shopping day of the year. Well, we found it and waited and hour and a half for coffee so of course I had a LARGE! I used what little part of my brain that was still functioning and grabbed a stray stool and sat on it right in the middle of the line. It was an absolute lifesaver and I only had to get up every 10 minutes to drag my stool another two steps. In case you wondered, I DID return the stool to it’s rightful place before heading out to the parking lot in search of our lost car.

After finally making it home around 5:30 in the morning, I was able to get 3 hours sleep. My cousin, who had been out all night shopping too had planned on coming by the house to visit. She was supposed to be there at 2:30pm and at around 2:35, she drove up and she was laughing like a hyena as she pulled into my driveway. When I asked what could possibly be so funny and wondering where her sudden burst of energy had come from she began to tell me what she had mistakenly done! Being that I only see her once a year or every two years, she had driven up to the WRONG house and had barged in only to find a man she didn’t know sitting in his recliner! Not sure if he was in shock or what but she said he never even moved from his chair! She stopped when she saw him and said, “OMG I think I have the wrong house.” He only responded with an “Uh, huh” so she turned to leave but then at one last attempt to prove she wasn’t crazy she said, “This isn’t Mandi’s house is it?” He only said one word, “no” so she turned and high tailed it out of there!!

It is now 6 hours later and I am still laughing about it! In fact, I could barely eat my dinner and I think I have managed to laugh so hard, I may be forming some defined abs…

Interview with Author & Award Winning Filmmaker Magda Olchawska

Introducing Author/Filmmaker Magda Olchawska

When and why did you begin writing?

I always loved stories & as a kid I even wrote a lot of poetry. I really got into writing more seriously when I attended a film school. Then I started writing scripts.
I needed to write a script for my school project & after that it just felt natural to keep writing scripts.
Few years ago, having nothing better to do, I started writing short stories & a novel trilogy, which hasn’t been finished yet.

What inspired you to write your first book?

My son. ;)) He inspired me to write my first whole book,  from the beginning to end. After that I was just hooked. Honestly I can spend hour after hour just writing

You are also an award winning filmmaker I see? Congratulations! Please elaborate. :o) Tell us a bit about that as well.

Thank you. I only got my first award this year after 10 years of making films but it’s still very nice J and extremely exciting.
Filmmaking is a long & exhausting process. So many people on so many different levels are involved in making films.
Often, a film takes so much life energy out of a filmmaker that it is good to have something else beside filmmaking.

For me something else is writing.

I love making films though & collaborating with other arts & artists on creating one final “product”. I guess I will always be a filmmaker. I just love being on a set.

When you write, do you work with an outline or just write?

I just write & see where it’s taking me. Then I do a lot, but I mean A LOT of re-writing.
I tried to work with an outline but it just wasn’t for me. I like my writing to be free-spirited, if you know what I mean.

How do you market your work? What avenues have you found work best in your genre?

I’m just starting to market my book. The first one “Mikolay & Julia Meet The Fairies” was always free of charge so I didn’t do that much marketing.

But this is what I do & have been doing lately:
– I tweet a lot
– I use for both, my books & reviewing other authors’ books.
– I ask people/authors if they would like to review my book. However, I do have established relationship with everyone before.
– I’m trying to organize blog tour but don’t know how well that will go yet J
– I’m going to have a banner advert on a children book site.

I think this is it for now. But if I come across anything else, I will let you know.

What book are you working on now?
I’m working on:
–    “My Mom Is A Superhero” which is going to be a series of 2 – 4 short stories about how different family members are seen by other family members.
–    “Pooh Gets Beating” is an illustrated book based on my son’s naughty behavior towards his best friend – Pooh.
–    “Maggie Lee” more grown-up short novel about a 30’s single mom who is a super warrior from a super secret society.
Describe your book in just a few sentences.
While searching the attic for a wand for Julia, Mikolay notices a Shadow moving around the boxes. Shadow magically disappears through the wall.
The little wizards follow the Shadow cautiously through the wall and discover hidden cages full of starving children and animals. Mikolay & Julia decide to rescue everyone.

Now for the fun part…

What’s your favorite food? Indian food & anything my hubby cooks.

What’s your favorite color? Purple & red

Coke or Pepsi? Definitely coke. I try to do diet but sometimes hard J

If you could be any cartoon character, who would you be and why? I think Winnie the Pooh or Wall-e. Pooh ‘cos everything in his world is very simple & he doesn’t have to grow up at all. Wall-e ‘cos he is determined, romantic, caring & trying to do best what he must do.

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? I would like to go to Rwanda, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand & would like to spend a bit more time in California.

What is your favorite book or who is your favorite author? (This can’t be your book)
I have too many favorite books for the moment J
My favorite authors: Kafka, Dostoevsky, J.K. Rowling.

What book are you reading now? I’m reading a bunch of books: “The Tiger Princess” by Sarah Renee, “Rascals Sing at the Opera House” by Patricia Puddle, “The Nameless World” by Heather Payer-Smith & “Selling Your Film Without Selling Your Soul” by Jon Reiss & Sheri Candler
